Frequently Asked Questions

WHEN SHOULD I START THE COURSE?

From about 26 weeks ideally. The more practice you do, the greater the efficacy of the course. However, provided you can finish the course before you give birth, the course content is still going to help. Listening to Hypnobirthing MP3s will mean you’re well on your way to your calm, gentle Hypnobirth.

I AM HAVING A CESAREAN. WILL HYPNOBIRTHING HELP ME?

Your baby can of course be born, by cesarean, into an environment that is peaceful and relaxed.  A cesarean can mirror many aspects of a natural birth, and you can include this in your birth plan.  Most of, if not all, your Little Steps tools are of use in the operating theatre.

Whether a cesarean is elected or needed, your birth is still as natural as you want it to be, in terms of being calm, relaxed, confident, in control and informed using hypnobirthing techniques, to welcome your baby.

MUST MY PARTNER ATTEND THE COURSE?

Yes as your partner has an important role to play in supporting you. If the father is unable to attend, your selected birthing partner may attend. Whoever you choose must attend all classes and the birth. The father’s attendance is strongly recommended if at all possible, as this helps to build a strong relationship with the child from the earliest opportunity.

DOES HYPNOBIRTHING GUARANTEE A PAIN-FREE LABOUR AND BIRTH?

The success of the techniques are related to the amount of practice that you put in. As a guide, approximately 65-70% of hypnobirthing mums don't require any pain relief. (Nearly all the mums in this category simply don't experience any pain – only pressure is felt.) Approximately 20-25% require only mild pain relief, like gas & air. Then 5-10% can fall into 'special circumstances', where medical intervention is required. So no, this is because there are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control. However, hypnobirthing mums say that hypnobirthing helps greatly – even when they were induced, or ended up having a cesarean. The aim of hypnobirthing is not a completely pain-free and picture-perfect 'natural' birth, although this is possible.
